Dhammayangyi Temple

Dhammayangyi Temple, the largest and widest of all the temples in Bagan, can be visible from all parts of Bagan. It is a massive, walled Buddhist temple built in 12th century during the reign of King Narathu, who was so ruthless that this temple is regarded as a “bad luck temple” by locals.

Dhammayangyi Temple is constructed in a plan similar to that of Ananda Temple, with projecting porticoes and receding terraces. Walking around the outer ambulatory, under ceilings so high you can only hear the squeaks of bats circling in the dark. Some intact stucco reliefs and paintings can be seen, showing that the work had been completed.

In Dhammayangyi Temple three out of the four Buddha sanctums were also filled with bricks. The remaining western shrine features two original side-by-side images of Gautama and Maitreya, the historical and future Buddhas. Dhammayangyi Temple is the only Bagan site with two side-by-side Buddhas, and still has many mysteries that wait for uncovering.
