Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda

Locate in the northeast of Shwedagon Paya and nearby Shweminwon Sasana Yeiktha Meditation Center of Yangon in Myanmar, Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda is famous for its giant 65-meter long Reclining Buddha image.

One of Myanmar’s more beautiful reclining Bhddhas, the placid face of Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda is topped by a crown encrusted in diamonds and other precious stones. Housed in a large metal-roofed shed North of Kandawgyi Lake, Chauk Htat Gyi Buddha image is adorned with expressive colors, white face, red lips, blue eye shadow, golden robe and red finger nails. Buddhist people come to Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda to pay their respect to the Reclining Buddha burning incense sticks and offering flowers. Close to the Buddha’s feet is the small shrine to Ma Thay, a holy man who has the power to stop rain and grant sailors a safe journey. Fortune-tellers on the surrounding platform offer astrological and palm readings.
