Four Thousand Islands
The Four Thousand Islands, also called as Si Phan Don, is a riverine archipelago located in the Mekong River, Champasak Province in southern Laos. Si Phan Don is characterized by numerous islands, half of which are submerged when the Mekong River is in flood. So the best time to visit the area is during the dry season, when the waters recede and the islands can be clearly seen. The principle islands are Don Khong (the largest), and Don Det and Don Khon. And Khon Phapheng Falls is a famous and spectacular scene of it.
A beautiful set of islands, set against a lazy and winding section of the Mekong. Outside of the tourist town, one can get a glimpse of local people, rice farms and plenty of farm animals, especially cows. There are also several temples about of average quality. The island is also oddly overrun by domestic dogs and cats. Most of them are sweet, friendly (and mostly clean) animals who like to be petted and especially fed.
