The Bund

The Bund is a long ribbon-like waterfront area that divides downtown Shanghai into the western Old Town (Pu Xi )and the eastern state-of-the-art New Area (Pu Dong), with the Huangpu River flowing in between.

Dating back to the time from the 1840's to the 1930's, many foreign businesses snatched the Bund to establish concessions, banks, headquarters, consulates and so on. The Western look of the Bund is the best statement of the honor “Paris of the East” that the old Shanghai earned.

Now the Bund is still lined with magnificent Western buildings in various styles, Gothic, Baroque, Rome, Renaissance, Classic and the combination of Eastern and Western style. The most celebrated buildings are the Shanghai Customs Tower and the Pudong Development Bank Tower.
