Terrace of The Leper King

Located just north of Terrace of Elephants in Angkor Thom, Terrace of the Leper King is a 7m-high platform, which is one of Angkor’s mysteries. Built in the Bayon style under Jayavarman VII, Terrace of the Leper King got its name from a nude, though sexless statue called as “Leper King” on the top of it.

Terrace of the Leper King, built in the late 12th century, once supported a pavilion made of lightweight materials. The front walls of the terrace are adorned with at least five tiers of meticulously executed carvings of seated apsaras. There is a hidden terrace across the front wall – a terrace within a terrace. The four tiers of apsaras and other figures are well-preserved, looking as fresh as they had been carved yesterday.
