Baphuon Temple

As a three-tiered temple-mountain built in the mid-11th century, Baphuon Temple is sometimes known as the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle, approached by a 200m elevated walkway made of sandstone. Located 200m northwest of Bayon Temple, it is a pyramidal representative of mythical Mt Meru. Also, Baphuon Temple is a typical example of Baphuon style.

There is a retaining wall of the second level on the western side of Baphuon Temple, featuring a reclining 60m-long Buddha, which is not completed and hard to make out. This hug project was undertaken by the Buddhist faithful around 500 years ago, which reinforces the fact that Angkor was never entirely abandoned.
