Banteay Samre

Banteay Samre is a Hindu temple complex in the Angkor Wat style at the north of Angkor Wat, built by SuryavarmanⅡin the early 12th century. Dating from the same period of Angkor Wat, Banteay Samre is well-preserved due to some extensive renovation work. The well-preserved relief carvings on the central buildings illustrate some of the ancient Hindu tales. 

With its name meaning "Citadel of Women"， Banteay Samre is mainly built of red sandstone, with brick and laterite used only for the enclosure walls and some structural elements. It consists of a central temple with four wings, preceded by a hall and also accompanied by two libraries, the southern one remarkably in a fairly healthy state of preservation. The whole ensemble is enclosed by two large concentric walls around what would have been the unique feature of an inner moat.
