Punakha Dzong
As the administrative centre of Punakha dzongkhag built in majestic structure in 1637, Punakha Dzong is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan. It’s another name - Pungtang Dechen Photrang Dzong means “the palace of great happiness or bliss”.
Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in the Punakha–Wangdue valley, Punakha Dzong is part of the Drukpa school of Mahayana Buddhism and houses the sacred relics of it, which is a six-storied structure made up of compacted earth, stones and timber with a central tower or Utse at an average elevation of 1,200 metres with a scenic, mountainous background.
The dzong is the venue for coronation of all the kings of Bhutan. It is also the right place to hold the annual Punakha Festival, a five-day festival named Demoche held in February or March which is largely attended by people from all villages and far places of the district and displays some very impressive shows.
