Chimi Lhakhang

As a famous monastery in Bhutan, Chimi Lhakhang, also known as Chime Lhakhang, is located 10 kilometres from Punakha near a village called Sopsokha surrounded by agricultural fields of mustards and rice. Prayer flags are lined all along the road there is a tiny village hamlet named Yowakha where all the houses have paintings of phalluses on their exterior walls. Chimi Lhakhang is a golden yellow roofed building in modest size and square shape with a golden spire. 

Lots of people visit Chimi Lhakhang to pray for children and to seek protection for children whether they have child or not. Women who come to the monastery seeking blessings of children by getting hit on the head by the presiding Lama with 10 inches ivory, wood and bone phallus and to also get the name of the child to be born chosen by picking bamboo slips placed in the altar inscribed with names of boys and girls. While Chimi Lhakhang is well-known for its fertility blessings, it also fulfils the other religious and spiritual needs of the Bhutanese.
